Laptops are made to be light and handy, but not without a price. There are lots of things out there that can address this issue, providing all the capabilities you want, but which of them are truly useful? Obviously, you can only judge them on a case-to-case basis, but some laptop accessories are just indispensable.
External Hard Drives
At a time when computers are prone to viruses, stray magnets and other risks, backing up is crucial. If you have few precious files to secure, you may only need a USB drive. For bigger chunks of data, you can consider an online service like Google Drive, DropBox, etc. If you want to save all your files, preferences and settings, an external hard drive will be worth the investment. People usually buy a basic, portable hard drive, but if portability isn’t important to you, you can save some bucks by getting a larger, heavier desktop external.
If you’re a computer professional and you notice your laptop burning, you can simply pull the base open and begin cleaning the fan. Else, purchase a laptop fan. The cost is around $15-20, but it’s likely that you’ll never have to replace it. It’s one of those expenses that are necessary, not only for the sake of convenience but more for safety. Fires stemming from burnt laptops aren’t exactly unheard of.
Whether or not you should keep spare batteries is disputable. As Apple laptops use built-in batteries, it would be largely useless to keep an extra set. But if you almost always need battery-based performance, then by all means, get one. That will come in handy on extended flights or bus rides. When getting extra batteries, make sure they’re made for your laptop. There’s nothing more frustrating than spending $80 on something that won’t fit.
Touchpads are quite annoying, though they’re not hard to get accustomed to with time. If you’re a hardcore gamer, having a killer mouse is probably a given. If you just like to use a mouse, or your touchpad is low quality or becoming intolerable, just get a mouse at your local store.
Don’t you just hate how laptop speakers make this tiny and hardly audible sound? Though they have improved much over the years, sometimes, they just won’t do, especially if you’re trying to watch a movie or a video. In this scenario, a pair of cheap speakers can be invaluable. You will surely find many cute and fancy options out there, but don’t let them tempt you. Just get what works for you, even if it looks dull and boring.
